Who/what is Sustainable Tarras?
We are a group of concerned locals who love Tarras and want to live here.
The threat of the airport stimulated our awareness of how fragile our local environment is, and we decided to stand up and try to protect it. To give ourselves an identity, we formed an incorporated society. Now, the threat of a huge, open pit gold mine stretching from Bendigo to Ophir has alarmed and motivated us further.
Sustainable Tarras Incorporated Society – incorporation date: 1st December 2020.
Aims:
“to engage with residents of Central Otago and wider New Zealand on sustainability issues affecting our region, to inform and stimulate discussion and represent significant public interests affecting sustainability in the Upper Clutha region”
Sustainable Tarras Incorporated Society
These are the things we want for our community:
- Sustainable, vibrant community
- Best environmental standards
- Diverse & resilient income streams
- Population growing in a steady, sustainable way
- No major industrialisation that will impact on our vision for a sustainable community
- Resources available to deal with challenges that threaten our community
At present there are two major concerns: first, the threat of the major international airport, proposed by Christchurch International Airport Ltd and second, the threat of a fast-tracked gold mine proposed by Santana Minerals Limited, so our activities are focused on these two threats. Down the line however, there are many things we’d love to do to make life in Tarras even better.
